MTD is coming for you?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax launched in the UK from April 2026. It applies only to people with relevant gross income (property and self employed) over £50,000. There were a number of exemptions - in particular, if you were resident abroad and filling in your UK tax return correctly, you were exempted.
That appears to be changing, based on the latest info in mid-August 2026.
From April 2027, MTD will apply for UK gross income (for overseas taxpayers with UK property, typically your gross rent) over £30,000 per year. What also looks like is new is that the exemption for non-residents is quietly being dropped as well. So it will not be ok to carry on as now....you will need to keep digital records and file these quarterly. If you are spreadsheet or software savvy not a problem - if not, it might be time to get some help.
