When is a government pension not a government pension?

14/07/2026

Another familiar topic came up this week.  A very-switched on prospective client was reviewing their affairs and telling me about their UK Government pension.  When I probed a bit more, it was from the NHS.  So not a government pension per HMRC - for French residents it is taxed in France, not the UK!

The obvious question -"Who told you it was a Government Pension?"   Answer - France Impots did!

Unfortunately, each French tax office has its own view of taxes and they are not always right.  Either check the manual here or just ask for advice.  It can make a big difference to both your total tax bill and actually being compliant with the law.
